SPACESHIP EARTH, DISNEY EPCOT
Orlanda, FL
Spaceship Earth is not just another attraction at Walt Disney World’s Epcot. This geodesic sphere stands as an iconic symbol of innovation and human ingenuity. The dome concept was inspired by architect R. Buckminster Fuller, but designed by Wallace Floyd Design Group. The structure is 180 feet in height and 165 feet in diameter, making it the most recognizable landmark in Disney World. In geometry terms, the building is a Class 2 geodesic polyhedron. Each face of the polyhedron is divided into three isosceles triangles composing a point - with 11,520 triangles then forming 3,840 points.
Inside, guests embark on a journey through time, exploring the evolution of communication from prehistoric times to the digital age. The ride features animatronic figures, immersive scenes, and a captivating narrative that showcases humanity's quest for knowledge and connection. The exterior, clad in reflective silver panels, glistens under the Florida sun, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that changes with the solar direction. At night, the building transforms into a vibrant canvas of colors, illuminated by an intricate lighting system. Spaceship Earth not only serves as a thrilling attraction, but also as a poignant reminder of our shared history and of the importance of preserving our planet for future generations.
