DORMITION CHURCH

Lviv, Ukraine

. . another Google find. It was probably the most photogenic Lviv building I found on the internet. There were lots of great views from which to sketch this Ukrainian Orthodox Church, with a bonus of a few great neighboring buildings. Architect Paolo Romans’ Renaissance design has rigorous order in the 213-foot tall tower, but the building breaks order with a number of domed elements randomly scattered about. The Lvivians do love their domes. As I wandered about the grounds to the rear of this building, there were interesting findings, revealing the more mundane characteristics of current urban living – laundry hung out to dry, trash cans overflowing, delaminated stucco (revealing the massive limestone blocks of the building), dilapidated/rusted downspouts and gutters, and the like
